Understanding Project Cargo

Project Cargo refers to the transportation of large, heavy, high-value, or complex pieces of equipment that cannot fit into standard containers. This includes Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC), which exceeds the standard dimensions of road/rail infrastructure.

Moving such cargo requires not just a truck, but precise engineering. It involves detailed Route Surveys to check bridge strength and overhead wire clearance, obtaining special road permits, and often chartering specialized Breakbulk Vessels or Aircraft.

Our Expertise

Specialized Services

Route Survey

Technical feasibility study of the transport route. We identify choke points, bridge load limits, and turning radiuses to ensure the cargo can pass safely.

Hydraulic Axles

Deployment of Goldhofer/Volvo hydraulic modular trailers. These distribute the weight of super-heavy loads evenly to protect road infrastructure.

Breakbulk Chartering

Booking space on Breakbulk or RORO vessels for cargo that cannot be containerized. We handle hook-to-hook operations at the port.

Project Registration

Assistance with registering Project Imports under Heading 98.01 of Customs Tariff to avail concessional duty rates for setting up new plants.

Lashing & Chocking

Industrial-grade packaging and securing of cargo on Flat Racks or Open Tops. Certified lashing to prevent movement during high-sea transit.

Civil Works

Temporary bypass construction, strengthening of bridges, or removal of obstacles (signboards/wires) to facilitate movement of ODC convoys.

Industries We Serve

Project logistics is vital for core industries. We have successfully executed complex movements for India's leading infrastructure and energy sectors.

  • Power & Energy

    Transformers, Turbines, Wind Blades.

  • Oil & Gas

    Distillation Columns, Pipes, Drilling Rigs.

  • Infrastructure

    Cranes, Earth Movers, Tunnel Borers.

  • Automotive

Press Lines, Assembly Robots, Paint Shops.

Why CloudDesk for Project-Cargo?

General logistics moves boxes; Project Cargo moves the infrastructure of nations. CloudDesk provides the blueprint.

1. Feasibility & Route Survey (Digital Mapping)

A 5-meter wide cargo cannot pass through a 4.8-meter wide tunnel. CloudDesk performs a Physical & Digital Route Survey before the cargo even leaves the factory. We identify low-hanging wires, weak bridges, and sharp turns, creating a "Route Clearance Protocol" that ensures zero mid-way bottlenecks.

2. Multimodal "Sync" (Sea-Rail-Road)

Project cargo often requires specialized Breakbulk vessels, followed by heavy-duty Hydraulic Axle Trailers. CloudDesk coordinates the"Crane-to-Axle" transfer at the port, ensuring that specialized lifting equipment is standing by the moment the ship berths to avoid massive port-stay penalties.

3. Specialized Customs "Project Imports"

Under Heading 98.01 of the Customs Tariff, entire projects can be imported at a concessional duty rate.CloudDesk manages the Project Import Registration, ensuring all individual shipments—from nuts and bolts to giant reactors—are assessed under a single project umbrella for maximum tax savings.

4. On-Site Engineering Support

We don't just "drop and go." CloudDesk provides Loading/Unloading Supervision. Our engineers oversee the "Lashing and Securing" of the cargo to ensure it survives high-seas turbulence and bumpy inland roads without shifting an inch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifies as "Project Cargo"?

Any cargo that is too big or too heavy to fit into a standard 20ft or 40ft container. This includes "Over-Dimensional" (width/height) and "Over-Weight" (tonnage) shipments that require Flat Racks, Open Tops, or Breakbulk vessels.

What is "Breakbulk" shipping?

It is a method of shipping where cargo is loaded individually onto the ship's deck or hold, rather than inside a container. It’s the standard for massive pipes, boilers, and heavy machinery.

What are "Hydraulic Axles"?

For extremely heavy cargo (over 50–100 tons), standard trucks fail. We use Multi-Axle Hydraulic Trailers that can distribute weight evenly and tilt to navigate uneven terrain, ensuring the cargo stays level.

Do I need special permits for ODC movement in India?

Yes. You need "Over Dimensional" permits from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and often state-level police clearances. CloudDesk’s Compliance Team handles these permits for every state the cargo traverses.

Can Project Cargo be imported under "Zero Duty"?

Yes, if the project falls under specific government schemes like EPCG or if it is a "Mega Power Project" or "Infrastructure Project" with a valid Essentiality Certificate. CloudDesk helps you secure these certificates.

What is the "Escort Vehicle" requirement?

For cargo exceeding specific width/length limits, an escort vehicle with warning lights is mandatory to guide traffic. CloudDesk provides Pilot Cars to ensure public safety and legal compliance during transit.

Is standard Marine Insurance enough for Project Cargo?

Usually, no. You need a "Loading & Unloading" add-on and often a "Marine Warranty Survey" (MWS). CloudDesk works with specialized underwriters to provide tailored project insurance that covers the high risks of heavy lifting.

What is a "Lashing Certificate"?

It is a document issued by a certified surveyor confirming that the cargo has been secured (lashed) properly to the vessel or trailer. Without this, most insurance claims for transit damage will be rejected.
